Physical Properties
Low deformation coefficient: This is a significant characteristic of TC4 titanium alloy during machining as the deformation coefficient is less than or close to 1. The sliding friction path of the chip on the rake face is greatly increased, which accelerates tool wear.
-
High cutting temperature
Due to the very low thermal conductivity of titanium alloy (only 1/5 to 1/7 of that of 45# steel), and the extremely short contact length between the chip and the rake face, the heat generated during cutting is not easily dissipated. As a result, it becomes concentrated in a small region near the cutting zone and cutting edge, leading to exceptionally high cutting temperatures. Under the same cutting conditions, the cutting temperature can be more than twice that when cutting 45# steel.
-
High cutting force per unit area
The main cutting force is about 20% smaller than when cutting steel. However, due to the extremely short contact length between the chip and the rake face, the cutting force per unit contact area increases significantly, which can easily lead to chipping.

Corrosion Resistance
Although titanium alloys are highly reactive, with a low equilibrium potential and a strong thermodynamic tendency to corrode in various media, they are actually very stable in many environments. Titanium demonstrates excellent corrosion resistance in oxidizing, neutral, and mildly reducing conditions. This stability is largely due to its strong affinity for oxygen, which allows a dense, strongly adherent, and highly inert oxide film to form on the surface of the metal when exposed to air or oxygen containing media. This protective film shields the underlying metal from corrosion, and even if it is damaged by mechanical wear, it can quickly regenerate, maintaining its corrosion resistance.
